How do I file a patent?

You can file a patent by filling out a patent application and submitting it to the Patent Office. You will also have to pay a fee for your patent application. There are different types of patents you can file for and some of them you can file online electronically.


How much do I have to pay to file a patent?

The fee for patents differs pertaining to the kind of patent filed. The basic filing fee for patents are as follows:


  • $300 for Utility Patents
  • $200 for Design Patents
  • $200 for Plant Patents

Do I have to pay the regular patent fee for a provisional patent?

No. Provisional patents are a low cost alternative. The basic filing fee for a provisional patent is $200.
